Swiss house raided over illegal poker for third time in a row

A house in Zürich has become a recurring character in the police records of local authorities, with the address once again being raided for illegal gambling.

In a press communiqué, the Swiss Federal Casino Commission (ESBK) released a joint statement with the Zürich Cantonal Police, confirming that a house bust had taken place and arrests were made in connection with illegal poker taking place.

Once on-site, authorities found four illegal poker tables set up, which resulted in the seizure of €7,590 (£6589) and CHF1850 (£1,790) in cash, bags containing game chips, various IT equipment, and multiple mobile phones.

A total of 23 people were at the address at the time of the infiltration, with authorities confirming that three have been arrested on suspicion of organising illegal gambling, with one of them being the manager of the bar that was also housed on the address.

Of interest, this is the third time that this address has been raided since 2023.

The ESBK further added that it opened three criminal proceedings, alleging that the persons of interest have breached gambling regulations under the Switzerland Gambling Act, which could also potentially bring up anti-money laundering charges if the trio is found guilty.

Just breaching the rules under the Gambling Act could bring about up to five years of prison sentence, accompanied by hefty financial penalties for both organisations and individuals.

SBC News readers will remember a similar case from back in December, when the ESBK and police again carried out a successful illegal gambling bust at two addresses in Switzerland.

Back then, the confiscated material consisted of CHF10,000 (£9,300) in cash, a poker table, slot machines, and multiple electronic devices. Another alleged ringleader was then captured, with CHF10,000 found on his person, which led to his private address also being searched. A further 25 people were also held for questioning.
