Two delighted dabbers from the West Midlands are closer to buying their first home after a memorable night at Mecca Bingo Acocks Green.
On Wednesday, August 6th, 31-year-old Sam Smitherman from Wythall joined his partner Bethany for a family birthday celebration at the popular bingo venue. The evening started with a modest £10 win, but ended with an incredible £50,000 jackpot from the National Bingo Game — enough to turbocharge the couple’s plans to get on the property ladder.
Sam’s lucky numbers landed a full house within just the first 16 calls, triggering the game’s top prize. At first, he misheard the announcement and thought he’d scooped £15,000. “When they told me it was actually £50,000, I was in shock,” he said. “We only go to bingo for a bit of fun, and the most I’d ever won before was about £90.”
Celebrating With a Nice Cup of Tea
Rather than hitting the town to celebrate, Sam headed home, phoned his parents, and enjoyed tea and biscuits in bed — still processing the reality of his win.
The pair currently rent a flat and have been saving for a larger family home with a garden and a playroom for their one-year-old daughter. “Our flat just isn’t big enough,” Sam explained. “Now we can really start looking for a proper family home. It feels incredible.”
The win is part of a wider trend that’s seeing younger players embrace bingo. Mecca reports that 44% of its new members in the first half of 2025 were under 35, drawn in by the game’s sociable atmosphere, low cost, and the chance of a big prize.
Michelle Duffy, assistant manager at Mecca Bingo Acocks Green, was on calling duty when the win happened. “It was the first game of the night when Sam shouted for a full house,” she said. “When I realised it had happened on the 16th number, my heart was racing. His partner burst into tears, the whole club was cheering, and we even set off confetti cannons. It was such a special moment — and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer couple.”
