Mecca Bingo has confirmed to BingoDaily that its Scarborough club, located on Albermarle Crescent, is under formal review, but insists that no decision has been made following growing local concern and widespread speculation about the venue’s future.
The news comes after reports reached the BingoDaily newsdesk suggesting the popular bingo hall was set to close on November 23rd. Many regulars, as reported here, expressed shock and dismay online, fearing that Scarborough could soon lose another long-standing entertainment venue. However, Mecca Bingo has now clarified that no final decision has been made, and that a closure is only a proposal at this stage.
In a detailed response to BingoDaily, a Mecca spokesperson said the company is approaching the end of the club’s lease, prompting the ongoing review. They stressed that Scarborough is currently the only Mecca venue under review, and that there are no plans to open a replacement club elsewhere in the area.
The spokesperson said:
“We are approaching the end of the lease on our club in Scarborough. The proposal to close the venue is still under review and the consultation process will conclude this month. Once a final decision is made, we will advise our customers of the outcome (and closure date, if appropriate) once we have spoken to our colleagues in Scarborough. Scarborough is the only club that is currently under review and at this stage there are no plans to open a new venue in the area.”
Mecca also provided an official statement for publication, acknowledging the difficult nature of reviewing or potentially closing a long-standing club:
“A proposal to close our club on Albermarle Crescent in Scarborough is being discussed. It’s never an easy decision to close a venue… we value our customers and know what an important role our clubs play in bringing communities together. We are currently in consultation with affected colleagues and will be announcing the decision later this month.”
Uncertain Future for Important Community Hub
The Scarborough club has been a staple of the community for decades, with many locals praising its social atmosphere and its role in reducing loneliness among older residents. Some customers have voiced fears that losing the venue would create a significant gap in the town’s entertainment and community offerings.
While the future of the Mecca Scarborough remains uncertain, customers will not have to wait long for clarity. The consultation is due to conclude this month, after which Mecca will announce whether the venue will continue to operate — or close its doors for good.
BingoDaily will continue to follow developments and provide updates as the situation progresses.
