It never rains, but it pours. Hot on the heels of the sad bingo news that Buzz Bingo Scunthorpe looks set to close along with Mecca Bingo Wolverhampton and the Mecca Bingo Bradford, Cornwall could well lose one of its last remaining bingo halls.
According to reports, the Capitol Bingo hall, on Alexandra Road in St Austell, Cornwall, has been placed for sale.
Listed with a guide price of £2 million, the building has a rich history. Having started life in the 1920s as a cinema, as so often the case with many bingo halls, the refined art-deco building also operated as a ballroom and a theatre before becoming a bingo hall. When it started as a cinema, the first film shown at the Capitol was Charlie Chaplin’s Gold Rush.
The Capitol Bingo venue currently houses a parade of four shops, including a hair salon, carpet shop, and bakery. There is also a large 35-space car park included in the sale.
Residential Homes to Replace a Bingo Hall…Again?
Although no official decision has been made on the future of the St. Austell bingo hall, the future does not look good. No word has been given by the owners to its future, and there is no update on their website or social media. However, the property guide states it is a “commercial and residential mixed-use development opportunity.”
With no planning permission in place or yet to be submitted, the sales guide of the property, marketed by Christie & Co in Bristol, also states:
“The owners have not submitted any planning applications, but initial pre-planning applications have indicated that the council would be willing to consider either a mixed-use residential and commercial scheme or a small housing development.”
A number of older bingo venues such as the St. Austell hall, with their central locations and spacious plots, have been turned into residential homes. It looks like the Capitol Bingo in St. Austell could be next.
