Alberta Sets July Deadline For iGaming Rollout Steps

By | March 30, 2026

Alberta has established July 13, 2026, as a key date for companies seeking entry into its forthcoming online gambling market, even though the official launch remains unconfirmed.

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) requires operators and suppliers to submit completed applications and fees by that deadline. “Operators have until July 13, 2026 to submit a completed application and pay all fees to AGLC.”

Applicants must first register with AGLC, then finalize agreements with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), which will oversee operations. This dual structure reflects Ontario’s model.

Interest has been strong, with more than 50 operator sites expressing intent to join. However, only a handful had completed payments by mid-March. “Despite strong interest from over 55 operator sites, only 9 sites have paid the required fees to date,” the regulator stated.

Unregulated Operators Face Cutoff

The July 13 deadline also marks a turning point for companies currently offering unregulated gambling in Alberta. Those seeking entry into the legal market must halt such activity by that date.

“Operators must also cease any unregulated lottery scheme activities (i.e. taking bets) by July 13, 2026.”

They must also resolve all outstanding wagers and return player balances before relaunching under regulation. “As noted previously, and consistent with the Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG), operators must ensure all outstanding bets are satisfied or cancelled prior to ceasing unregulated operations.”

Regulators stressed proper handling of player accounts during the transition: “This serves as a reminder that player account management must remain transparent, orderly, and compliant during the transition period.”

A grace period of up to October 13 may be granted in limited cases, though failure to comply could affect eligibility. Authorities warned that non-compliance “may result in a finding of unsuitability for iGaming registration in Alberta.”

Launch Timing Still Uncertain

Officials have not confirmed whether July aligns with the market’s debut. The AiGC will determine the final launch date.

“In the event the market ‘go live’ date, as determined by the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), occurs after July 13, 2026, all unregulated market activities must cease by the ‘go live’ date,” AGLC said.

Provincial leadership has suggested a launch could arrive earlier in the summer. The fact that we’ve released the regulations tells you that we’re moving fast,” said Minister Dale Nally, adding, “We have a date in mind. We’re just not ready to put out the media just yet.”

Alberta is preparing to expand beyond its single regulated platform, Play Alberta, toward a competitive market similar to Ontario’s. “As an open, regulated market approaches, it was important to give iGaming operators adequate notice informing them of the transition period in Alberta,” an AGLC spokesperson said.

Alberta’s move follows Ontario’s shift to an open iGaming system in 2022, where dozens of operators now run licensed platforms. Alberta is expected to attract a similar level of participation, including both new entrants and companies already active in the province’s grey market.

The transition presents logistical challenges, particularly for operators that must shut down existing services and relaunch under new rules. Some may also require users to create new accounts once the regulated market opens.
