Americans Increasingly Turn to Legal Gaming While Recognizing Industry Responsibility

By | November 3, 2025

Legal gaming continues to attract unprecedented participation in the United States, according to the latest survey by the American Gaming Association (AGA). The study shows Americans are not only visiting casinos in record numbers but are also acknowledging the industry’s commitment to responsible play and its positive economic role.

In the past year, 53% of U.S. adults – 134 million people – visited a casino for gambling or other entertainment purposes, the highest level recorded to date. Over half of adults (57%) participated in some form of gambling, while 30% experienced brick-and-mortar casinos, and 21% placed a sports bet.

“These results underscore a sustainable foundation for the American gaming industry, reflecting strong consumer confidence in a state-regulated market as a safe and trusted form of entertainment,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller.

Americans generally view gambling as socially acceptable: 9 in 10 believe casino gambling is suitable for themselves or others, while 62% consider it personally acceptable.

Casinos as Engines of Local and National Growth

Beyond entertainment, Americans increasingly recognize casinos’ contributions to local and national economies. Large majorities say the industry drives tourism, creates jobs, and boosts local commerce:

  • 85% agree casinos bring entertainment and dining options to regions that might otherwise lack them.
  • 86% say casinos increase tourism and attract meetings or conventions.
  • 82% note the industry generates well-paying jobs that cannot be outsourced.
  • 82% acknowledge its role in driving U.S. investment.

Casino-goers also appreciate the value and creativity of their experiences, with 89% viewing casino entertainment as innovative and 90% rating it as good value compared to other leisure options. Younger audiences are increasingly represented among visitors, indicating a continuing appeal to a new generation of players.

Continued Support for Legal Sports Betting

Support for sports betting remains strong and bipartisan, with 74% of Americans favoring legal, regulated sports wagering in their states. More than three-quarters (78%) see sports betting primarily as a form of entertainment.

While the vast majority of bettors prefer legal platforms—93% of sports bettors and 90% of iGaming users cite legality as a key consideration—more than 40% report difficulty identifying which operators are licensed. This highlights the ongoing need for clear regulation and credible advertising, particularly as 70% of residents in states with legal sports betting believe the industry markets responsibly.

Growing Confidence in Responsible Gaming

Awareness of responsible gaming practices has risen sharply in recent years. 64% of Americans now say the industry promotes safe gaming and combats problem gambling, up from under 40% in 2018.

Among direct participants, confidence is even higher: 77% of casino patrons and 84% of sports bettors regard the industry’s responsible gaming programs as effective. Nearly 72% of all Americans reported seeing responsible gaming messaging in the past year, up from 56% in 2022. Among sports bettors, 88% rate these initiatives positively.

“These findings demonstrate that consumers are increasingly aware of the gaming industry’s dual role—providing entertainment while prioritizing player safety,” Miller added.
