Massachusetts-betting-handle-and-revenue-slip-to-yearly-low-in-JuneMassachusetts sportsbooks reported a notable slowdown in both betting handle and revenue in June 2025, marking the lowest monthly totals so far this year. Still, the state managed to post a significant improvement over June 2024, thanks largely to increased operator win rates.

According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, total sports betting revenue—combining online and retail activity—reached $62.1 million during June. This represented a 53.3% increase compared to the same month last year, but a steep 23.1% drop from May’s figures. June’s results were the weakest since December 2024, when the state recorded $57.5 million in revenue.

Online Betting Leads, Despite Decline in Handle

The bulk of June’s earnings came from online platforms, which generated $61.6 million. Retail sportsbooks contributed a much smaller portion at $474,426.

Bettors across Massachusetts wagered a total of $532.7 million during the month. While this was up 4.6% from June 2024, it was down 18.8% from May and marked the lowest handle recorded since August 2024. Despite this dip in volume, a strong average hold of 11.66% helped offset some of the downturn.

DraftKings Dominates Market, Again

Breaking down operator performance, DraftKings maintained its lead with $31.4 million in revenue from a $266.1 million handle—an 11.80% hold. FanDuel followed with $17.4 million in earnings from $139 million wagered, producing a 12.52% hold.

Trailing behind, BetMGM recorded $5.2 million in revenue from $45.8 million, yielding an 11.35% hold. Fanatics followed closely with $4.6 million on $37.8 million bet, for a 12.17% hold. ESPN Bet produced $1.5 million in revenue from $15.2 million, leading the pack in win rate with a 15.2% hold. Caesars reported $1.2 million off $17.6 million in bets, with an 8.52% hold.

Bally Bet remained at the bottom of the online rankings, bringing in just $227,277 from a $4 million handle, resulting in a 5.71% hold.

Retail Sportsbooks Generate Modest Returns

Among brick-and-mortar venues, Plainridge Park Casino led the way with $243,665 in revenue from $2.3 million bet, reflecting a 10.49% hold. Encore Boston Harbor posted $171,393 on $3.9 million, with a 4.42% hold. MGM Springfield reported $59,369 from $1 million, equating to a 5.72% hold.

June’s broader gambling market performance included $97.7 million in land-based casino revenue. Encore Boston Harbor led the sector with $60.2 million, followed by MGM Springfield at $22.8 million and Plainridge Park Casino with $14.6 million.

State Tax Haul Tops $40 Million for June

Massachusetts collected $40.3 million in taxes from gambling activities during June. This included $12.4 million from sports betting and $27.9 million from land-based casinos. That brings the state’s total sports betting tax revenue for 2025 past $80 million.

Despite a drop in monthly wagers, June still marked the fifth time in six months that sportsbook revenue exceeded $60 million, bolstered by strong NBA Finals and MLB betting activity.
