Massachusetts Casinos Report 1.7% Revenue Growth in August

By | September 25, 2025

Massachusetts’ gaming industry recorded modest but notable growth in August 2025, with total gross gaming revenue (GGR) from its three licensed casinos reaching $105 million. This represents a 1.7% year-over-year increase compared to the $103.3 million earned in August 2024, according to data published by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC).

Encore Boston Harbor Tops Revenue Charts

Encore Boston Harbor, located in Everett, once again led the state’s gaming facilities in revenue generation. The casino brought in $65 million in August, reflecting a slight increase of 0.1% from the $64.9 million it posted during the same month a year ago.

Slot machines were the primary contributor to Encore’s performance, generating $38.8 million, a solid 8% rise year-over-year. However, this gain was offset by a significant decline in table game earnings, which fell 9.7% to $26.2 million, down from $29 million in August 2024.

MGM Springfield Sees Stronger Growth

MGM Springfield recorded the second-highest revenue for the month, showing a more pronounced increase than its Boston-area counterpart. The casino reported $24.9 million in August revenue, marking a 5.2% uptick from $23.7 million the previous year. Like Encore, the gains were driven by strong slot performance.

Slots at MGM brought in $19.9 million, up 8.7% from $18.3 million a year earlier. Table games, on the other hand, saw a 6.9% decline, slipping from $5.3 million to $5 million.

Plainridge Park Casino Posts Modest Rise

Plainridge Park Casino, the state’s only slots-only facility with no table games, reported $15.1 million in revenue in August, a 2.8% increase from the $14.7 million generated in August 2024. While it lags behind the larger resort casinos in total earnings, Plainridge remains consistent in its year-over-year performance.

Statewide Trends Show Growth in Slots, Drop in Table Games

The state’s overall revenue growth in August was fueled entirely by the slot machine segment, which saw combined revenue of $73.9 million, up 7.1% from $69 million the previous year. Table games across the state brought in $31.1 million, a 9.3% decrease compared to $34.3 million in August 2024.

Tax Structure and Reporting Requirements

All Massachusetts gaming licensees are required to submit monthly revenue reports to the MGC, which then publishes the data publicly on MassGaming.com. These reports may be updated retroactively, as operators sometimes revise figures based on ongoing financial reviews.

The state imposes different tax rates based on license categories. Category 1 resort casinos—Encore and MGM Springfield—are taxed at 25% of their gross gaming revenue. Plainridge Park, as a Category 2 slots parlor, is taxed at a much higher rate of 49%.

For sports wagering, Category 1 and 2 licensees are taxed at 15%, while Category 3 mobile-only operators face a 20% tax rate.

These taxes contribute to a range of state-funded programs, including education, infrastructure, and local government support, reinforcing the broader economic impact of the state’s gaming industry.
