Massachusetts bettors drove an unprecedented level of activity in October, propelling the state to its highest monthly sports betting handle to date. According to figures reported by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), sportsbooks accepted $892.2 million in wagers during the month. The total represented an 11.5% jump over September’s $800.3 million record and stood 19.3% higher than the $748.1 million posted in October 2024.
The vast majority of bets—$879.2 million—were placed online, while retail facilities contributed another $12.6 million. This performance pushed Massachusetts into the position of having the fourth-highest monthly sports betting handle among all U.S. states, trailing only New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Sportsbooks generated $71.3 million in revenue, outpacing last October by 47.6% and exceeding September by 36.3%, though still shy of the state’s all-time revenue peak of $96.4 million set in January 2025. Overall statewide hold settled at 7.99%, while the aggregated online hold reached 8.3%.
DraftKings Dominates While Fanatics Gains Ground
Local giant DraftKings remained the standout market leader. The operator reported $447.4 million in wagers and $38.5 million in revenue, supported by an 8.61% hold in one report and an 8.9% hold in another set of MGC figures, both of which highlighted continued growth. FanDuel once again occupied second position with a $237.3 million handle and $17.3 million in revenue, posting a 7.38% hold in one dataset and a 9.3% hold in another.
Fanatics continued to climb the rankings, finishing third with $82.4 million in wagers and $7.5 million in revenue. Its year-over-year gains were striking, with handle rising 133.9% and revenue up 272.8%. BetMGM followed with $55 million in bets and $3.6 million in revenue, while ESPN Bet and Caesars reported handles of $27.7 million and $25 million, respectively. Bally Bet remained the smallest operator with $4.8 million wagered and $314,452 in revenue.
Retail wagering was comparatively minimal. Plainridge Park led the group with $306,328 in revenue on a $5.4 million handle. Encore Boston Harbor earned $292,573 from $6 million in wagers, and MGM Springfield recorded no revenue, despite collecting $1.3 million in bets.
Casino Gaming Revenue Also Rises
Beyond sports betting, casino activity in Massachusetts posted another solid month. Combined revenue from the three gaming facilities reached $96.9 million, edging last October by 2.3% and improving on September by 1.3%. Slot machines contributed $71.7 million, while table games added $25.1 million.
Encore Boston Harbor remained the state’s leading casino with $57.6 million in monthly revenue, ahead of MGM Springfield’s $24.1 million and Plainridge Park’s $15.2 million.
Tax collections reflected these gains. The state took in $42.1 million in gambling-related taxes, including $27.9 million from casinos and $14.2 million from sports betting. Regulators noted the strong performance but reiterated their stance that sportsbooks risk license revocation if they follow national trends involving prediction platforms and event contracts.
