Virginia’s sports betting industry continued its upward trajectory in June 2025, with the state reporting notable year-on-year gains in both total wagers and revenue. According to figures released by the Virginia Lottery, bettors across the state wagered nearly $478 million during the month — a 15% increase compared to June 2024.
Virginia Reports Strong Growth in June Sports Betting Figures
Between June 1 and June 30, 2025, a total of $477,848,533 was wagered across both mobile and retail platforms. While the handle fell short of May 2025’s total by 19.7%, the year-over-year comparison paints a more favorable picture of consistent market expansion.
Mobile Dominates, Retail Takes a Backseat
Of the total bets placed in June, mobile sportsbooks accounted for a commanding $472.8 million, reinforcing the dominant role of digital platforms in Virginia’s betting landscape. In contrast, land-based casinos brought in just over $5 million in wagers.
Despite the healthy betting volume, retail operators reported losses.Online sportsbooks posted $57.4 million in adjusted gross revenue (AGR), whereas retail sportsbooks recorded a $327,616 deficit — dragging the overall market AGR down to $57.1 million for the month. That figure still marked a 41% improvement over June 2024, although it represented a 15.9% drop from May 2025.
Across the board, bettors won back $417.1 million in June. After allowable deductions totaling approximately $3.65 million — none of which were from promotions or bonuses — the final AGR stood at $57,106,754. The industry-wide hold, or operator win percentage, came in at 11.95%.
Tax Contributions Surge Past $8.7 Million
Virginia imposes a 15% tax on AGR from licensed sports betting operators. In June, twelve permit holders reported positive adjusted gross revenue, contributing a combined $8,674,412.47 in taxes — up from $6.2 million in the same month a year ago.
Of the total tax revenue collected, $8,457,552.16 was allocated to the state’s General Fund, with the remaining $216,860.31 directed to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund. The latter is overseen by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and supports services for those impacted by gambling-related issues.
Expanded Operator Activity Supports Market Growth
The growing betting market was supported by the activity of 14 mobile operators and three retail sportsbooks operating out of physical casino locations. This multi-channel approach continues to broaden access and participation across the state, although mobile remains the overwhelming preference among bettors.
