The launch comes in response to growing concerns around gambling harm, particularly among younger adults aged 18 to 24, who are now shown to be twice as likely to want to cut back or stop gambling compared to the general population. According to new data from GambleAware’s 2024 Treatment and Support Survey, 29% of 18-24-year-olds expressed a desire to reduce or eliminate gambling, compared to just 15% of gamblers across all age groups.

Personalized Help for Millions Seeking to Cut Back

The tool provides a tailored digital experience designed to support individuals at varying stages of gambling-related harm. Users can set personal goals and track their gambling behaviors over time, with resources offered to aid self-monitoring and positive change. Upon launch, nearly half (48%) of 18-24-year-olds using the app cited “saving money” as their primary reason for engaging with the tool, while 27% said their goal was to “feel happier.”

These findings reflect a broader trend across Great Britain, where an estimated 4.5 million people are seeking to reduce or stop gambling altogether.³ Research from GambleAware’s 2023 Audience Segmentation report revealed that 93% of these individuals—over 4.2 million—prefer to manage their gambling without turning to formal treatment services.³ This underscores the importance of accessible and informal self-help tools like the GambleAware Support Tool to meet individuals where they are and prevent gambling-related harm from escalating.

Built on Global Gambling Risk Guidelines

The app was developed in accordance with the internationally recognized Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGG), which were created through global academic collaboration. These guidelines offer three core principles for minimizing harm:

  • Keep gambling to no more than 1% of monthly income
  • Limit gambling to four days per month
  • Engage in no more than two types of gambling monthly⁴

This makes the GambleAware Support Tool the only app in Great Britain to integrate the LRGGs directly into its user recommendations.

By logging gambling frequency and spend, users receive feedback tailored to their goals—whether that’s complete cessation or simply reducing frequency and financial risk.

Tools, Resources, and Access to Further Support

Alongside personalized activity tracking, the app includes a library of evidence-based content, such as podcasts and educational materials. For those requiring more structured help, the app connects users to GambleAware’s service finder, pointing them to formal treatment options.

Alexia Clifford, Chief Communications Officer for GambleAware, emphasized the role of digital access in increasing gambling participation, stating, “Whether individuals want to reduce, manage or stay gamble-free, the GambleAware Support Tool is here every step of your journey.

“The digital age means we essentially have a casino in our pocket, and we know increased accessibility leads to increased participation and therefore increased risk of harm.

These harms are a growing public health issue, but early intervention is key, and the GambleAware Support Tool app is designed to give people a timely insight into their gambling, with the aim of supporting their journey to reducing or quitting their activity.”

Real Voices Reflect Positive Impact

Catherine Adams, a member of the GambleAware Lived Experience Council, shared her story: “I would be gambling on the computer from six in the evening until six in the morning and I just was not sleeping.

It’s positive being able to monitor your progress yourself and to see how well you’re doing in reducing or quitting your gambling if you’re goal orientated. To see ‘I’ve done this many days now ‘or ‘I’ve saved this much money,’ I think it really does give variety of choice in your recovery.”

The app is now available for download on both the Google Play Store (for Android users) and the Apple App Store (for iOS users).
