Sweden’s regulator watches Mr Green’s every move

Sweden’s regulator, Spelinspektionen, is continuing to enact supervisory actions over evoke’s iGaming brand Mr Green.

In the latest regulatory update, Mr Green was listed among three other brands that have found themselves under increased monitoring – those being CoinToss Ltd, Kaprifol Services Ltd, and Mr Vegas Ltd.

The intended measures are to ensure that all four operators are following the required customer protection measures as per the Swedish gambling framework, especially around player deposits.

Licensed operators are legally obliged to follow up with any player that reaches more than SEK 10,000 (£800) per month, at which point they are contacted by the gambling provider to provide evidence of income and be assessed on whether they are at risk of problem gambling.

Regarding Mr Green, the enhanced monitoring of the brand could be in connection with a financial penalty by the Swedish regulator back in 2024, when the evoke property was hit with SEK 12m (£900k) relating to deficiencies in its KYC and AML procedures dating back to 2021.

This sum was a reduction of a previously much larger penalty of SEK 31.5m (£2.35m), which the Swedish Supreme Court decided to halve so that it properly correlates to the severity and duration of the violations.

Despite it being a rare occurrence for Spelinspektionen to suspend the licence of a regulated operator – most bans are directed at offshore companies – Mr Green still needs to tread carefully so that it doesn’t fall on the regulator’s bad side.

This need for utmost compliance is further intensified by the fact that Mr Green owner evoke is in talks with Bally’s Intralot for a complete buyout, as recently announced by both gambling heavyweights.

Pulling the shutters down in a European market will definitely sway the discussion in an unfavourable direction for evoke, given that Bally’s Intralot has the potential to become a dominant market leader across the continent through its combined market share with evoke’s brand exposure across Spain, Italy, Romania, the UK, Belgium, and Denmark.
