Mecca Bingo has completed a £1.6 million transformation of its Stockton club, creating a new social bingo lounge, expanding its entertainment offer and giving one of the operator’s biggest venues a major facelift.
The investment at the Mecca Bingo Stockton Chandlers Wharf club comes at an important moment for Mecca Bingo.
While parent company Rank Group has been rationalising its estate and closing a number of venues, it is simultaneously investing heavily in selected clubs that it believes have the potential to thrive.
Stockton is clearly one of them.
The club, described by Mecca as its largest venue, now boasts the new 1825 Lounge, interactive darts, a new bar, Sky Sports screens, a DJ booth and 168 additional seats, taking the venue’s total capacity to more than 1,500.
The £1.6 million project is now complete, with a major relaunch weekend planned for the first weekend in September.
Mecca creates new social bingo experience
The centrepiece of the refurbishment is the 1825 Lounge, a new area designed to broaden the experience beyond traditional bingo.
The name pays tribute to Stockton’s place in railway history and the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825.
The new lounge combines bingo with other forms of competitive and social entertainment, including interactive darts, live sports, music, food and drink.
Customers can play on electronic tablets with an auto-dab function or continue using traditional paper bingo tickets.
Sarah O’Neill, central operations director at Mecca Bingo, said Stockton was a natural choice for the investment.
“We’ve been making winners in Stockton for thirty years.
“As our biggest venue, with such a vibrant community around it, it made complete sense to embrace the rising popularity of competitive socialising and invest in the club to ensure that Mecca Stockton is fit for the future.”
The strategy reflects a wider shift across the bingo industry, as operators look to make their venues attractive to a broader demographic.
Rather than relying exclusively on traditional bingo sessions, modern clubs are increasingly combining bingo with food and drink, sports, gaming, music and other social entertainment.
168 seats added as Stockton gets major makeover
The 1825 Lounge has added 168 seats to the Stockton venue, bringing its overall capacity to more than 1,500.
The popular bingo club’s gaming machine area has also been upgraded and now contains 115 gaming machines featuring a range of games.
Meanwhile, the main bingo hall has received a substantial refresh, including new carpets, reupholstered seating and additional digital screens.
The investment follows a major refurbishment of the venue’s exterior, which was completed in 2023.
The result is a venue that Mecca hopes can appeal to both its existing customer base and a new generation of bingo players.
Stockton has a history of big bingo wins
Stockton has long been one of Mecca Bingo’s standout clubs when it comes to major prize wins.
The venue has previously earned a reputation as one of the luckiest bingo halls in Britain.
In 2020, BingoDaily reported on Stockton celebrating its third £50,000 National Bingo Game jackpot in just three months, reinforcing its reputation as a major-winning venue.
That winning form has continued, with Mecca now revealing that Stockton players collected more than £4.8 million in bingo prize money during the past year alone.
BingoDaily also highlighted the club’s record payouts in previous coverage, when Stockton players were reported to have received more than £2.5 million in prize money during 2019.
That story, Mecca Bingo winners receiving £285,000 a day in 2019, showed just how significant the Stockton club has been within Mecca’s estate.
New lounge puts socialising at heart of club
The 1825 Lounge represents perhaps the biggest change to the Stockton proposition.
Mecca’s investment aims to create a space where customers can spend longer at the venue and enjoy different forms of entertainment before, between or after bingo sessions.
Alongside bingo, the lounge features interactive darts, TV screens, a DJ booth and food and drink.
Stockton general manager Lynne Butterworth said the new space would give the club a significantly broader entertainment proposition.
“The creation of the lounge provides a brand-new entertainment space for Stockton, with interactive darts, TV screens, a DJ booth, food and drink, as well as bingo.
“We can’t wait to welcome new and existing customers through the door over the official relaunch weekend.”
The approach follows a growing trend towards competitive socialising, with darts, live entertainment, food and drink becoming increasingly important elements of the modern bingo club experience.
For Mecca, Stockton provides an opportunity to bring those elements together under one roof while retaining bingo as the central attraction.
Mecca’s Stockton investment comes amid club closures
The £1.6 million investment is particularly significant against a backdrop of major restructuring across Mecca’s UK estate.
Parent company Rank Group has been closing a number of Mecca venues as it seeks to concentrate its resources on a smaller number of stronger-performing clubs.
BingoDaily recently reported on the Mecca Bingo club closures in June, when eight venues closed their doors.
The closures marked another major reduction in the size of the Mecca estate and highlighted Rank’s increasingly selective approach.
Earlier in the process, BingoDaily also reported on the future of the Scarborough venue, with Mecca confirming that its closure was still under consultation in our report on the Mecca Bingo Scarborough closure consultation.
The contrast between those closures and the money being spent in Stockton is significant.
Rank is not abandoning land-based bingo. Instead, it is attempting to create a smaller estate of venues that can attract larger audiences and generate stronger returns.
Mecca’s financial results show signs of recovery
Rank Group’s latest financial results provide further context for the Stockton investment.
Mecca generated £143.1 million in net gaming revenue during the 2025/26 financial year, up from £140.4 million the previous year.
Like-for-like net gaming revenue increased by 4%, while underlying like-for-like operating profit more than doubled from £4.3 million to £8.9 million.
Statutory operating profit was £7.8 million, compared with a £900,000 loss the previous year.
The figures suggest that Rank’s strategy of reducing the size of the Mecca estate while focusing on stronger clubs is beginning to deliver results.
The company has previously outlined its intention to maximise cash generation from a smaller, higher-quality Mecca estate.
Stockton appears to be exactly the type of venue that fits that strategy.
Bingo duty change provides another boost
Mecca’s improved financial performance has also benefited from the abolition of bingo duty from April 2026.
Rank said the change generated an in-year benefit of £1.6 million for Mecca, with the annualised benefit expected to be approximately £6.4 million in 2026/27.
The company expects Mecca to deliver double-digit operating profit growth in the current financial year.
The removal of bingo duty was a major development for Britain’s land-based bingo industry after years of campaigning to reduce the tax burden on UK bingo clubs.
For operators, the additional margin creates more scope to invest in venues, technology, prizes and customer experiences.
The Stockton refurbishment provides a tangible example of where some of that investment can go.
A different future for the traditional bingo hall?
The transformation of Stockton raises a bigger question for the British bingo industry: what does the modern bingo club need to look like to survive and thrive?
The answer increasingly appears to involve more than bingo alone.
Stockton now combines a traditional bingo hall with a social lounge, interactive darts, live sport, food and drink, gaming machines and music.
The model aims to make the venue a destination rather than simply somewhere customers visit for a bingo session.
That is particularly important for operators such as Mecca, which have seen their estate size decline dramatically in recent years.
Rank’s Mecca estate has fallen from 84 venues in 2019 to 41, according to the company’s latest figures.
That makes each remaining club increasingly important.
Why Stockton matters to Mecca
Stockton has several characteristics that make it an obvious candidate for major investment.
It is Mecca’s largest venue, has a substantial local customer base and has a long history of producing significant bingo winners.
It has also now been given the physical space to support several different entertainment propositions.
The £1.6 million investment therefore represents more than a straightforward refurbishment.
It is a statement about what Mecca believes its successful clubs need to become.
The company is closing venues where it cannot see a sustainable future while investing heavily in others where it believes there is an opportunity to grow.
Stockton’s transformation will therefore be watched closely across the bingo industry.
If the new 1825 Lounge succeeds in bringing more people through the doors, encouraging existing customers to stay longer and attracting younger or less traditional bingo audiences, it could provide a blueprint for other Mecca venues.
Big relaunch planned for September
Customers will get their first major opportunity to experience the revamped club during the official relaunch weekend from Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6.
The weekend will feature prize draws, live music, cocktails and themed entertainment.
A special bingo session on Sunday evening will feature more than £30,000 in prizes, as well as the chance to win the £250,000 National Bingo Game jackpot.
For Mecca, Stockton is now much more than one of its biggest bingo halls.
It showcases what the company believes the future of land-based bingo can look like.
And with eight clubs having closed during June and the overall Mecca estate now almost half the size it was in 2019, the £1.6 million bet on Stockton could prove to be one of the clearest indicators yet of where the operator sees the future of the UK bingo club.
