Sunday Bloody Sunday for Mecca Bingo as More Clubs Closing

By | February 22, 2023

Since the COVID pandemic hit these shores and blighted the hospitality industry, around half of all bingo clubs in the UK have closed.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be an end to the closures as Bingo Daily has learned of more surprise bingo club closures happening this Sunday, the 26th of February, which is officially yet to be confirmed. However, BingoDaily has been informed through reliable sources that at least a further THREE Mecca Bingo venues will close permanently this weekend.

On the same day that sees the doors close on  Mecca Bingo Doncaster, Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil,  Mecca Bingo Chester, and the recently confirmed Mecca Bingo Sale closure, there are at least THREE more Mecca Bingo clubs calling their last numbers this coming Sunday.

On a dark day for land-based bingo, Mecca Bingo Hayes and Hillingdon will close despite a spirited effort from local campaigners. Mecca Bingo Hayes, on Uxbridge Road, has been at the heart of the local community since it opened in 1939 and began life as a Mecca bingo hall in 1967.

Also closing this Sunday is Mecca Bingo Hunslet in Leeds.  The purpose-built bingo hall holds up to 1500 patrons, but despite reports by patrons of the venue being “heaving,” it too has been condemned to closure.

Hurt and Upset at Closures

Next up on the Mecca Bingo chopping block is Mecca Bingo Dewsbury. Despite its closure being “discussed” for several weeks, as was the case in the other bingo halls, no official announcement or update from Mecca Bingo on its social media pages has been made. However, BingoDaily understands this Sunday will be Mecca Bingo Dewsbury’s last day.

BingoDaily has reached out to Mecca Bingo for comment and to ask if any further Mecca Bingo halls will be closing. However, the Rank Group (LON: RNK) owned group has not offered any response.

Reading through the social media comments, many locals feel let down by Mecca Bingo, with a lack of clarity and consultation in the closing process. There is also a great deal of upset that such an important part of the local communities, many of which the beating heart of the community for more than four decades, will be lost forever.
