The 2026 FIFA World Cup became the biggest soccer betting event recorded by several major US sportsbooks, with operators reporting unprecedented wagering activity throughout the tournament. The Spain-Argentina final, won 1-0 by Spain in extra time on July 19, delivered new betting records.
The tournament drove major growth across the US betting market, with sportsbooks pointing to increased soccer interest, expanded betting options and the North American setting as key factors.
Final Match Sets Operator Records
Several sportsbooks reported their highest-ever soccer betting figures during the final. DraftKings recorded around 2 million wagers on Spain-Argentina, making it the most-bet soccer match in company history.
Caesars Sportsbook also reported its largest soccer betting event. Handle for the final finished nearly 65% above its previous single-match record and reached 4.4 times its earlier tournament high.
“The World Cup Final delivered the biggest soccer betting event in Caesars Sportsbook history,” the operator’s trading team said in a statement. “Interest was off the charts before kickoff, with pre-match wagering already surpassing our previous tournament record.”
BetMGM identified the final as its biggest soccer event by tickets and handle.
“The 2026 World Cup was record-breaking at BetMGM on many fronts, including the Spain-Argentina Final being the most-bet (tickets and handle) soccer match ever in company history,” BetMGM Senior Trading Manager Christian Cipollini said.
The match exceeded previous soccer betting records and attracted more wagers than several major US sporting events, including games from the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final, March Madness and the 2025 World Series.
Tournament Drives Wider Betting Growth
Betting activity increased throughout the competition. Caesars reported that the World Cup generated 30% more bets than the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments combined, while handle finished slightly above March Madness.
DraftKings recorded 650% more bets than during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while BetMGM reported a 211% increase.
Hard Rock Bet SVP of sportsbook Neil Walsh described the tournament’s impact.
“This World Cup will go down as the biggest betting event in American history — we’re talking the equivalent of ten Super Bowls,” Walsh said. “A sport we were once told Americans would not embrace turned into one for the history books. The whole country wanted in.”
Team USA became DraftKings’ most-bet team, while Lionel Messi ranked as its most-bet player during Argentina’s run. Player markets also gained popularity, with BetMGM reporting Kylian Mbappé carried its largest player liability and FanDuel naming him its leading goalscorer selection.
US Market Looks Ahead
Sportsbooks linked the tournament’s success partly to its North American location. Caesars said participation exceeded expectations across futures, event markets and Same Game Parlay products.
“There was some uncertainty around the impact of an extended tournament format, but World Cup fever took hold following the USMNT’s promising start, and that enthusiasm continued throughout the knockout stages and into the final.”
DraftKings reported a 250% increase in active Spanish-language soccer customers during the tournament following the launch of Spanish-language functionality in 2025.
Operators have already opened early markets for the 2030 World Cup, with Spain installed as the early favorite by DraftKings and bet365 following its title victory.
