The global iGaming industry is closely watching Alberta as the province prepares to open its regulated online gambling market on July 13. The launch is expected to position Canada as one of the most attractive jurisdictions for operators and suppliers, according to Greentube, a developer of online casino content.
Alberta will become the second Canadian province to establish a private, fully regulated online gambling framework, following Ontario’s market opening in 2022.
Alberta’s Market Entry Draws Industry Attention
Greentube has described Alberta’s upcoming launch as a significant development for the global sector. The company sees the province’s regulatory structure as closely aligned with Ontario’s competitive model, which has already attracted international operators.
David Bolas, Commercial Director at Greentube, said the legislation and developing framework signal a clear direction for the province.
“With legislation now passed and a framework being developed, the province is clearly positioning itself to follow Ontario’s competitive model. From our perspective, that presents both opportunity and responsibility,” he said.
He added the company is preparing to expand through existing partnerships while pursuing new commercial relationships. Greentube believes its Ontario experience provides a strong foundation for Alberta’s rollout.
Ontario Experience Shapes Canadian Strategy
Greentube has operated in Ontario since the province launched its regulated market in 2022, working with operators including BetMGM, bet365, FanDuel and DraftKings, alongside regional brands.
Bolas said this broad distribution has strengthened visibility and performance in a competitive environment. He also noted long-standing relationships with provincial lottery operators, giving Greentube a wider view of Canada’s gaming landscape.
“We have relationships with provincial operators too, where our content has been live for many years. That combination of heritage partnerships and new regulated market successes has ensured Canada consistently ranks among our top three growth markets worldwide,” Bolas said.
Player Expectations Shape Content Strategy
As Alberta enters the market, suppliers expect player behaviour to reflect Ontario trends, where competition is already strong.
Bolas said differentiation depends on game variety, brand strength and long-term engagement. Greentube’s catalogue includes Thunder Cash™ and Diamond Cash™ alongside Piggy Prizes™ and Starlight Jackpots™, which have performed well in North America.
Canadian players tend to favour clear mechanics, structured bonus features and recognisable brands, he added.
“We see a particular appetite for games that combine familiar formats with engaging bonus structures and progressive-style mechanics,” he said. “At the same time, operating within regulated provincial frameworks means players also place significant trust in more certified content.”
Localisation And Regulation Remain Key
Greentube continues to adapt its content for regulated markets, balancing established franchises with localised releases tailored to regional demand.
Bolas said this approach supports both traditional and modern player preferences in Canada.
“Operating within regulated markets also reinforces player confidence; something we consider fundamental to long-term success in Canada,” he said.
As Alberta’s launch nears, suppliers like Greentube are positioning for competition in what is expected to become one of North America’s most active regulated iGaming markets.
