IBIA Secures Integrity Role in Alberta Market

By | May 15, 2026

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has secured approval to operate as a licensed integrity monitor in Alberta ahead of the province’s regulated iGaming and sports betting market launch scheduled for July 13.

The approval places integrity monitoring within Alberta’s regulatory framework from the first day of legal operations, with the organisation set to work alongside the Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) to identify and report suspicious betting activity.

Alberta Prepares For Regulated Market Launch

Alberta is preparing for the arrival of an expanded online gambling market expected to include around 30 sportsbook and casino brands when the sector opens in July. Existing government-run platform Play Alberta is expected to face competition from operators including theScore, FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers and Betway.

IBIA’s approval allows the association to provide monitoring services to licensed operators entering the province. The organisation said it would use its Global Monitoring & Alert Platform (MAP) to assess betting activity across regulated markets and help identify irregular wagering patterns.

In a statement posted on LinkedIn, the association described the move as part of a wider effort to ensure proper oversight accompanies market expansion.

The statement read: “This is a very good practice for how regulated betting markets should develop: with clear obligations for operators, trusted information sharing and practical systems in place to identify and escalate suspicious betting activity.”

The organisation added: “We are pleased to support Alberta as it opens its regulated market and to contribute to safeguarding sport and regulated sports betting in the province. Operators seeking an Alberta licence are encouraged to contact us to discuss how IBIA can support compliance and integrity objectives in the new market.”

Monitoring Platform To Support Enforcement Efforts

IBIA said its MAP system will collect operator intelligence and account-level data to help evaluate suspicious activity across sports betting markets. The organisation will then share information with the AGLC when activity is considered potentially problematic.

The monitoring arrangement forms part of Alberta’s broader framework for regulating online gambling and sports wagering as the province moves toward a competitive market model.

IBIA already operates in Ontario, and the Alberta approval further expands the organisation’s role in North America. According to the association’s 2026 Integrity Report, North America generated 20% of all integrity alerts recorded globally, trailing only Europe, which accounted for 28%.

The report did not specify how many alerts came from Canadian markets. Across North America, tennis and mixed martial arts generated the highest number of integrity alerts during the reporting period.

Recent Alert Figures Highlight Integrity Concerns

IBIA’s first-quarter figures for 2026 showed 70 suspicious betting alerts recorded across 10 sports worldwide. Football produced the highest number of alerts with 25 cases, followed by tennis with 16 and esports with 15.

The organisation said information-sharing agreements and monitoring systems remain important components in detecting potential betting manipulation within regulated markets.

Alberta’s decision to approve an integrity monitor before launch reflects increasing attention from regulators toward compliance procedures and betting oversight as more Canadian provinces continue expanding legal online gaming options.
