There’s been a lot of talk about online poker lately. So why should slot players even care? Well, if you’re a fan of online slots (and we think you probably are if you’re reading this), then the success of poker on the web should be on your radar. But why?
Simply put, we’re all in this together! And the success of one gambling vertical usually helps the others. That means if online poker does well, online slots will surely follow. And this week we have three more states talking about forming online poker compacts across state borders. There is also the option of joining the existing poker agreement that’s between Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Two weeks ago I told you all that the Justice Department had decided to give up on it’s decades long crusade against online gambling. One of the consequences of that decision is that online poker now has no restrictions to cross state borders and spread across the country. Here’s how that would work:
Slot players know well that most casino games are played against the house. However, poker needs players (and a lot of them) competing against one another in order to generate “rake”. That’s what makes money for the casinos. And that’s why small states with lower populations can hardly deal with the costs of regulating online poker… there’s nothing to be made!
All that has now changed with the DOJ decision to back off. Now, even the smallest of states can join an online poker pact. That’s a pool of players across state lines to form a larger player pools. Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan are making online poker news by having already started talking about forming an internet poker compact with one another, with other states, or even joining an existing poker compact.
Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware already have an existing poker compact, allowing players in those states to play across state lines against one another. A compact which the Justice Department did nothing to stop, by the way. Now that compact could be about to double in size… and if so, we could be on the precipice of another online poker explosion across the country!
