EFL Championship outfit Bristol City is reportedly the subject of interest from business mogul and Kaizen Gaming owner George Daskalakis.
Sky News reported this morning that Daskalakis, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Kaizen, which operates the well-known Betano brand, “is in talks to buy a large stake” in Bristol City.
Daskalakis, Kaizen and Betano have already familiarised themselves with English football in a commercial sense – as sponsors.
Last season, the Betano brand was the front-of-shirt sponsor for Europa League winners Aston Villa. The duo remain partners for the 2026/27 season, albeit with a change in appearance.
Betano’s already-extensive football portfolio
With a ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships effective in the Premier League from the start of next season on Friday, Betano has switched its logo from the front of Villa shirts to the sleeves.
Betano has also struck a training kit deal with Tottenham Hotspur over the summer as operators adapt to the ban and pivot to other kinds of sponsorship deals.
It is not just English football that the company has invested in too, as the firm is set to continue as FC Porto’s front-of-shirt sponsor for the next three seasons, has previously struck deals in South America with the Argentine national team and domestic clubs like Flamengo and River Plate.
Its sponsorship roster has included major international tournaments too, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup as well as the 2026 edition, and the 2024 Copa America. Betano made history as the first official betting partner of the World Cup when it sponsored the 2022 tournament.
The stake in Bristol City sought out by Daskalakis is reported to be a minor one. The Robins’ current owner is Steve Lansdown, Co-Founder of UK-based financial services giant Hargreaves Lansdown.
There has been much interest in Championship clubs from bookmakers over the summer, as seen by deals including Midnite’s spending spree with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough, as well as BOYLE Sports continuing its front-of-shirt sponsorship of recently-relegated West Ham United.
Daskalakis becoming a stakeholder in Bristol City would eclipse all of those partnerships mentioned.
Should Bristol City fans be optimistic?
At the weekend, Bristol City began its 12th successive season in England’s second tier – a spell which has seen one playoff campaign in 2024/25.
The club, alongside the likes of Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers, have become synonymous with mid-table stability in the Championship over the last decade.
Bristol City are yet to spend a season in the Premier League and have not competed in England’s top tier since before World War I.
Investment from Daskalakis, whose company recently announced it had hit a valuation of some $10bn, could help to spur on some ambition and a push for promotion.
Michael Skubala, who led Lincoln City to the EFL League One title last season, is now at the helm for Bristol City – another fairly ambitious appointment given he has recent experience in guiding teams to promotion.
Skubala will be hoping for an improvement on Bristol City’s 0-2 loss at its home ground, Ashton Gate, against Millwall in the club’s season opener on Saturday.
With a new-look coaching staff, eight new summer signings so far for a total of £9.6m, and a multi-billionaire reportedly interested in investing, there are clear signs of optimism for Robins fans.
Daskalakis is reported to have been working with co-investor Sandford Loudon.
Loudon is a partner at Oakvale Capital – an advisory firm which has previously been involved in deals regarding Chelsea, Leyton Orient and the Liga Portugal.
SBC News has contacted Betano representatives for comment.
