A grandmother and granddaughter have shared an unforgettable night after winning back-to-back jackpots during the same bingo session at Mecca Bingo Oldham.
Twenty-year-old Amiee Armstrong and her grandmother Christine Rhodes, 70, left fellow players cheering after both landed full house wins in consecutive Big Bonus games, taking home more than £2,500 between them.
The extraordinary double happened at Mecca Bingo’s King Street club in Oldham on 21 July, with Amiee collecting more than £1,200 before Christine followed just moments later with a prize worth over £1,300.
Rare Mecca Bingo Double Leaves Players Amazed
The Big Bonus game is played simultaneously across Mecca Bingo’s 41 clubs, meaning winners can come from anywhere in the UK. The Mecca Bingo Big Bonus game costs just £1 to play and runs six times every day across the operator’s nationwide clubs. The jackpot continues to grow until a player completes a full house within the first 44 numbers called.
For two consecutive jackpots to be won in the same club is rare. For both winners to be from the same family is even more remarkable.
The incredible moment sparked applause throughout the venue as fellow players celebrated the lucky pair.
Four Generations of One Bingo Family
For Christine and Amiee, the wins were about much more than money. Their family has been visiting Mecca Bingo Oldham for more than three decades. Christine’s mother, Joan, attended the popular bingo club’s opening night and introduced her daughter to the game before the tradition was passed down to younger generations.
Today, Christine regularly enjoys bingo sessions with her son Bryan and granddaughter Amiee whenever she’s home from university.
Amiee said:
“Whenever I’m home from university we go to Mecca together a few times a week. I didn’t know anything about bingo until Nana asked me to come along. It’s actually quite hard to find something that everyone enjoys, but bingo brings us all together. It’s something we can all do as a family and spend proper quality time with each other.”
Their Winnings Already Have a Special Purpose
Amiee admitted she didn’t even realise how much she’d won before her grandmother repeated the feat moments later. She said:
“I won first and didn’t even realise how much I’d won. Then Nana put her pound in and won straight afterwards. Everyone in the club was clapping for us – it was such a lovely atmosphere. We’re hoping to put some of the winnings towards a trip to Whitby for Nana’s birthday.”
Winners at Mecca Bingo Oldham
Christine believes changing seats may have brought them some extra luck.
She said:
“Bingo has always been a big part of our family. My mum was a regular at Mecca Oldham and was even there the day it opened. Now I love coming with Amiee and my family. It gives us something to do together, instead of just sitting at home. We chat, have a laugh and make memories. We normally sit at our lucky table, but we decided to move that night – I think we’ve found ourselves a new lucky one!”
Mecca Bingo Manager Calls It One of His Most Memorable Wins
Nick Cook, general manager at Mecca Bingo Oldham, said he had never witnessed anything quite like it.
He said:
“I’ve worked for Mecca for 20 years and celebrated plenty of big wins. These two may not be the biggest but they are ones that I’ll always remember. As the Big Bonus game is played across our clubs, the winner could be in any of our venues, so to have two in the same club is unusual, but to have a granddaughter and grandmother both win in such quick succession is incredible!
“One of the best things about bingo is how it brings people together. Whether it’s friends, couples or families, it’s something everyone can enjoy – with the added excitement that anyone could be the next jackpot winner!”
Just weeks after Mecca closed eight bingo venues, it is good to report some good bingo news from the Rank Group-owned retail bingo operator.
