Federal Land Rules Limit Betting at 2027 NFL Draft

By | June 29, 2026

Fans heading to the 2027 NFL Draft in Washington, DC, will find one major difference from previous editions. Although mobile sports betting is legal across much of the District, federal property surrounding the National Mall falls outside those permitted areas.

The NFL will stage the draft from 29 April to 1 May 2027 on the National Mall, with the Draft Theater positioned in front of the United States Capitol. The league plans free fan attractions throughout the three-day event, including interactive exhibits, games and displays of the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Visitors hoping to place wagers during the draft may need to leave federal land before opening licensed sportsbook apps. Nearby roads, including Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, sit within legal betting zones, although the boundaries can be difficult to identify in crowded event areas.

Washington’s patchwork of federal and non-federal property creates one of the country’s most demanding geolocation environments for sportsbook operators.

“Washington, D.C. represents one of the most precise geolocation challenges in the country,” Elizabeth Cronan, GeoComply’s VP of Government Relations, said in an email. “Around the National Mall, legal and restricted zones can be separated by just a sidewalk, and the technology has to know exactly where that line is. When geolocation is done right, compliance becomes invisible – and that’s exactly how it should feel for fans.”

Visitors Face Different Betting Rules Across the Region

Licensed mobile sportsbooks, including FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanatics and theScoreBet, operate across eligible parts of Washington, DC, outside federal land and arena exclusivity zones.

Many residents of the Washington metropolitan area already understand the differences between local jurisdictions. Maryland permits betting on the NFL Draft, while Virginia prohibits it despite offering legal sports betting on other markets.

Tourists may be less familiar with those rules and could encounter repeated location errors while trying to place bets around the National Mall. Organisers expect hundreds of thousands of visitors, following the record crowd of more than 805,000 people at the 2026 event in Pittsburgh.

Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of club business, international and global events, said, “The NFL Draft continues to grow as one of our biggest and most accessible events, and we are excited to welcome fans and prospects to Washington, DC, in 2027. Our nation’s capital will provide an incredible, iconically American stage to host fans from around the world, as we celebrate the next generation of NFL stars.”

Betting Growth Continues While NFL Keeps Gambling Rules

Sports betting activity remained strong during April 2026. New Jersey sportsbooks reported $102.1 million in gaming revenue, Pennsylvania generated $59 million in taxable sports wagering revenue, and Arizona posted $59.8 million in gross gaming revenue, up 37.8% from April 2025.

The NFL also continues to reinforce its gambling policies. In October 2025, the league reminded all 32 clubs that players cannot bet on NFL games, manipulate contests or provide inside information for betting purposes. League rules also prohibit athletes from asking others to place bets on their behalf or promoting betting operators.
