A much-loved ex-bingo hall is set to get a new lease of life after a planning application has been submitted to turn the former Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil into a place of worship.
The once-popular bingo venue was closed in 2023. The closure of Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil marked the end of half a century of bingo at the former theatre, cinema, and snooker hall.
Having taken over the top floor of the iconic venue in 1971, Mecca Bingo continued to use the building with its dual purpose until 1992, when the upstairs cinemas closed and Mecca Bingo took over the ground-floor auditorium.
In 2012, the Hull venue underwent a £300,000 interior renovation, updating its bar, toilets, gaming area, and kitchen. Despite its long-standing presence, Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil closed its doors on 26 February 2023, citing rising costs and shifting attendance patterns. It was one of the many UK bingo halls to close during or immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic.
After years of the building being unused, an application has now been submitted to the council by the Calvary International Christian Centre, which seeks to turn the building, next to a Wetherspoons pub, into a church.
For bingo fans in Hull, the closure of the Mecca Bingo Hull Cecil was a sad day for the tight-knit Hull community. However, there remains the Mecca Bingo Hull Clough, not too far away.
